UNESCO Recognition for Inis Oírr’s Stone Walls

A view of Inis Meain through a Dry-Stone Wall

We’re delighted to share some proud news from our small island. The traditional dry-stone walls as seen on Inis Oírr (Inisheer) have recently been recognised by UNESCO as part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

This global award celebrates the time-honoured knowledge, skill, and cultural value of the walls that shape our landscape and identity.

A Craft Rooted in the Land

If you’ve ever cycled across Inis Oírr, you’ve likely felt the quiet power of the walls. They stretch across the island in every direction. Built without cement or mortar, each stone is placed by hand with patience and care. They shelter the land, guide the traveler, and whisper stories of generations past.

Our Connection to Stone

At Rothaí Inis Oírr, working with stone isn’t just something we admire — it’s a part of who we are. Our bike hire premises were designed and built by ourselves using local limestone and traditional island craft passed down through generations. While not dry-stone in the UNESCO-recognised sense, our building reflects the same spirit — a deep respect for the land, thoughtful hands, and timeless techniques.

Our connection to stone goes beyond our walls. We’ve been closely involved with Féile na gCloch, the island’s annual stone festival and the very first event of its kind in Ireland. This unique gathering brings together craftspeople, students, and visitors from across the country and beyond to learn, share, and celebrate traditional building methods — especially dry-stone walling.

Féile na gCloch is more than a festival; it’s a living expression of island heritage, where the past is passed forward through stories, skills, and stone. We’re proud to support and participate in it each year, and to help keep that tradition alive in both spirit and practice.

Explore It by Bike

There’s no better way to experience the dry-stone landscape than by bike. Take the quieter bóithríns and you’ll see the stonework up close, winding through fields and hillsides with wildflowers tucked between the cracks. It’s both beautiful and alive with meaning.

When you hire a bike from Rothaí Inis Oírr, you’re not just exploring a place. You’re moving through centuries of skill, tradition, and care – at your own pace, in your own way.
